Jul 8: Card member services scam

"This is an important message from card member services. THIS is your final courtesy call. Before we close the file on your annual credit card account review. We have sent you several courtesy notices. To your residence. This will be the last time to take adVANtage in lowering your credit card interest rate. To as little as six percent on ALL your credit card accounts. The only requirement is you must owe at least three thousand dollars between all your credit card accounts and have one in good standing. These people KEEP CALLING ME!!! I hate them so much. I registered my number a long time ago with the National Do Not Call Registry, and I just registered there again (https://www.donotcall.gov/faq/faqdefault.aspx). I also filed a complaint against these awful telemarketers. I suggest you all do the same: https://complaints.donotcall.gov/complaint/complaintcheck.aspx?panel=2. Unfortunately, most of the time they call it comes up as "unknown number." But this last time I got the number: 978-570-22421. Below is my complaint log to the National Do Not Call Registry, which required me to provide the telemarketer's phone number and information about myself.

TO THE NATIONAL DO NOT CALL REGISTRY:

This recording has called me at least 10x in the past year or less. I have chosen their option to not call me 4x but they still call. I have chosen their option to speak with a representative another 4x to ask them not to call me, but they hang up on me. Here is the recording text: "This is an important message from card member services. THIS is your final courtesy call. Before we close the file on your annual credit card account review. We have sent you several courtesy notices. To your residence. This will be the last time to take adVANtage in lowering your credit card interest rate. I get several calls a day on my cell. Today I tried talking very slowly and child like and they said they would remove my number, but not 3 hrs. Later I got another call from a different area code number with the same scam recording.

I did a lot of research on the web and I found the following:

1. The real company behind this is First USA which appears to be a bank using this mailing address:
First USA
Cardmember Services
P.O. Box 15298
Wilmington, DE 19850-5298

2. First USA is using a third party called Cardmember Services to run the website and telephone call processes. The website is:
www.cardmemberservices.com

3. You can use the donotcall.gov website to file a complaint. This does not appear to be used by law enforcement since complaints have existed for this company for quite some time.

4. The best method for filing a complaint is to the Federal Communications Commission which has the governmental responsibility for enforcing the laws about telemarketing calls like this one. The website for filing a FCC complaint is:
www.fcc.gov/cgb/complaints.html

I got one of these also. The caller said he was with Cardmember Services out of Wilmington Delaware and represented VISA, MC, Discover and all major banks. The phone number that came up in my caller-ID was 202-351-3916, which is a Washington DC cell number.

I just received a call fromthem. I am also on the DO NOT CALL list. I decided to press 1 to speak to someone. he answered asking did you press 1 to lower your rates? I said "no I pressed 1 to tell you to stop calling me I'm on the Do NOT CALL list." his reply was "I dont give a f*#k what list your on" and he hung up. Really? a total scam not credited business would speak like that. I want to turn him in I have a number from Arlington (360)474-3977

This might be related to, of all things, AARP. First USA Cardmember Services issues the AARP Visa card. It's possible AARP has given your phone number to one of their overfriendly "partners."

To stop calls emanating from AARP's list and "partners," phone 888-OUR-AARP (888-687-2277) and give them what-for. You'll need your AARP membership number to talk to a rep and get put on their "do not call" list.

these crooks keep calling me. When I tell them I am on the do-not-call list, they usually hang up, but I got a couple of "chatty" people, too. One of them told me I will keep getting calls from them because every time I use a credit or debit card, they are notified and this then triggers a call from them. Another one told me all I have to do is give them my credit card number and they can go right into my Discover Card account to see my balance, interest rate, etc. When I want to go into my own account I have to answer one of a rotating list of questions (place of birth, high school attended, etc.)Interestingly, they do have my name. I asked the other day "what does the second and final notice" phrase mean, since I have been getting this same stupid call for years and the woman said "Well, Miss ----, I don't know what the message says, but we are trying to help you with your interest rate". I have decided from now on, I will do as I have seen suggested - say I have to go get my credit card so I can give them the number and just leave the phone laying down till they get tired of being left on hold and disconnect. Last week, I pretended to be interested in their spiel, but when they asked for my credit card number, I hesitated and said I thought it was not a good idea to give out a number to someone on a phone call. Finally she hung up on me.

Add me to the list, from 1-202-499-1488 most recently, but also from a bunch of "Unavailable" numbers, and others. These people are relentless. Apparently, the DO NOT CALL number is an absolute joke, if they can't even get these folks.

I did call AARP and the Lady that I spoke with said that they do not have a "Do not call list". The only thing she could do was remove my phone number from my file. Which is fine with me. If they somehow get my E-mail add. I can block them, but can't do that on the phone without phone #'s. Private caller and oooooooo's just won't do it.
